    Poets and poetry lovers filled the Derby City Espresso coffee shop for The Word Spoken on Wednesday July 13, 2011.  Performers took turns "in the round" sharing two - three pieces at a time. 

    The open mic is billed as a place to meet for beer, fellowship and poetry, and the poetry begins at 9 p.m.

    The poetry and readings range from novel excerpts to peaceful prose to energetic spoken word and slam poetry. The next event is Wednesday, August 10 at Derby City Espresso, and all are welcome. People begin arriving about 8 p.m.

    Derby City Espresso owner Matthew Landan has established a creative place that is open to artists and performers. Landan lives over the shop and  likes having people in his "living room" to enjoy coffee, ales, and entertainment.

    Touch Armour Class got things started off and hosted the event.

    Jill Sadowski gave the most energetic and passionate performance of the night creating quite a stir amongst the audience.

    Poet Jimmy Besseck, who also hosts events in town like Music Attack 3 at Grouchos tonight in Germantown, has published his first book of poetry called the Lead Standard. It's a collection of his humorous observations on every day life. 

    Award winning poet Lady Lazarus shared a few pieces, including Pisces Man.

    Former Courier-Journal writer and new Leo writer Tamara Ikenberg shared a gory excerpt from her novel in progress White Cake.

    Matthew Presley and Beverly Frederick both shared some of their deep and moving poetry. Matthew also played his wooden flute.

    June Leffler, editor of Good Will Zine, a digital and audio zine performed a piece she had just written in addition to distributing copies of the audio zine to poets.
