    Jay Pharoah at Louisville Improv

Jay Pharoah developed his comedy skills at a young age in local comedy clubs. He went on to tour in the United Kingdom, the United States and Montreal, and participated in the sketch comedy series, Charlie Murphy's Crash Comedy. Pharoah previously performed stand-up on BET's One Mic Stand and was the star of the 2010 BET Awards short The Package. You probably know him best though from Saturday Night Live.

    Janiva Magness at Uncle Slayton's

Multiple award-winning vocalist Janiva Magness is among the premier blues and R&B singers in the world today—and she's kicking off her summer tour here at the Uncle. Originally from Detroit and now based in Los Angeles, hers is a voice that’s made for the blues and her new release is further proof of that. But the real revelation here is the original material—it’s hard to believe that she hasn’t been writing her own songs for years. Although Stronger For It, her third release for Alligator Records, includes re-imaginings of great songs by other artists (killer versions of Tom Waits/Kathleen Brennan’s “Make It Rain,” Ike Turner’s “You Got What You Wanted,” Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Whoop and Holler” and Buddy and Julie Miller’s “Dirty Water”), the real standouts are her own compositions.

Melville Otter Briney and Old Louisville at The Filson Historical Society

Before she became a celebrated Louisville Times columnist, educating and entertaining readers on the city’s history with her weekly editorial page entitled Old Louisville, Melville Otter was a young girl growing up in the neighborhood we now refer to as Old Louisville. Melville and her parents, John D. Otter and Melvilla Carter Otter, lived on St. James Court, the neighborhood of choice for city’s literary and political elite. Melville’s memory books, dating from 1912 through 1916, document her teenage years as the only child of a prominent, well-to-do family in the early 20th century. Using the multiple manuscript and photograph collections on Melville Otter Briney and her family, the Filson will delve into Melville’s accounts of life on St. James Court in the 1910s, as well as touch upon her family background, her education and her career as a journalist and author.

    MINI takes Louisville Day

More than 300 MINI drivers from around the country will invade Louisville Saturday,  as part of a 3,900-mile cross-country road rally designed to capture the fun and excitement of the MINI Cooper and the whole family of other MINIs. A special Bluegrass Road Rally will be held that afternoon. The one-hour drive along scenic country roads will begin across from Louisville Slugger Field, travel down River Road into Oldham County, and back. The rally will be led by the MINI Maven, the red-haired brand ambassador for MINI of Louisville who likes to tell people she meets while motoring around in her MINI, "Maven means expert, and MINI means fun. I guess that makes me an expert on fun!" A bootgate (that's MINI for tailgate) party will be held in the parking lot on Main Street, across from Louisville Slugger Field beginning at 4-pm. Later, drivers will walk across the street to attend a Louisville Bats baseball game, where one lucky MINI driver on the tour will win a chance to throw out the first pitch.

'American Buffalo' by David Mamet at Walden Theatre

This summer the Walden Theatre Alumni are bringing you American Buffalo by David Mamet. It's going to be an intense night, so make sure you leave any collectible coins at home. From the play's publisher: "In a Chicago junk shop three small time crooks plot to rob a man of his coin collection, the showpiece of which is a valuable Buffalo nickel. These high-minded grifters fancy themselves businessmen pursuing legitimate free enterprise. But the reality of the three--Donny, the oafish junk shop owner; Bobby, a young junkie Donny has taken under his wing and Teach, a violently paranoid braggart—is that they are merely pawns caught up in their own game of last-chance, dead-end, empty pipe dreams."

    $8 ($5 with student ID)
