Last night, downtown was the site of an ICE protest, so I know that some people have distressing news on their minds. There are plenty of places to weigh in on national politics, so no need for that here, but I thought it might be helpful to share about how we deal with national news coverage of events we might find upsetting...
Which of the following takes do you share? Check as many as you agree with.
It’s my duty to stay at least somewhat aware of national/international news even if I find it upsetting
I don’t let news events away from Louisville affect my emotions day to day
When an event threatens important values I hold, I can’t help but follow the news
When I learn about an event in the news that threatens people, I need to know more
When I learn about an event in the news that threatens people, I need to take action in some way
Following the national news makes me feel more empowered
Following the national news makes me feel more powerless
Avoiding the national news would probably make me feel better
It bothers me when dangerous or tragic events are presented with journalistic objectivity and without empathy or emotion
The way most national news is reported puts a spotlight on our differences
It’s hard to find a news source that reflects my outlook
High-quality news sources exist that are not influenced by powerful interests
Anything else on your mind about the subject? Any other options we should've included?
And your name? (Not to quote you or anything, this just helps me keep track of who has answered.)
