A LOCAL SAYS:

Over the past couple of weeks, the group we ask questions to each Friday has been exploring large-crowds season here in town. (We included lots of what folks have been sharing here in the Louisville Big-Event Book of Manners.)

One of us, thinking about all of the visitors who’ll be in Louisville this fall, suggested this question that we put to the group:

What’s a place visitors to town should check out — that they probably wouldn’t know about unless a local told them?

We brought up so many spots, fitting into four main categories: the outdoors, museums, food & drink, and then a grab bag.

The Outdoors

“The Ohio River Greenway. Bike, run or walk the paths in Southern Indiana. Stop for a break at the Widow’s Walk Ice Creamery in Clarksville.”

Museums

“The Filson Historical Society. Not one but two galleries with great exhibits right now: textiles/quilts and 75 years of Louisville Ballet.”

Food & Drink

“Shirley Mae’s Cafe. Love the hot water cornbread.”

Grab Bag

“Works by the local artist Ed Hamilton. His sculpture of Abraham Lincoln is at Waterfront Park, and his sculpture of York — who was on the Lewis and Clark Expedition — is at the Belvedere. Marvel at his skill.”

“Louisville is a collection of novelty neighborhoods, not a unified city.”

“When the traffic light turns red, expect two more cars to go through the light. And people here CANNOT drive in the rain.”

“We don’t say you, we don’t say y’all, we say you all.”

“Coming here in several months or like a year? Try to get your reservation at MeeshMeesh now.”

“We have too many good coffee shops for anyone to go to a Starbucks.”

“There’s a lot more here than bourbon and horses — not that there’s anything wrong with those.”

“Stay away from the Louisville pronunciation debate. Everyone loses.”
